National Home Security Month October 2015

Time flies doesn’t it? 2015 has certainly flown by for me. As a family we had a big build up to our daughter’s wedding in August. It was a wonderful occasion and as father of the bride, it was a very proud day for me.

So, with September almost over now, there is definitely a hint of Autumn in the air. October is an important month in my business as it’s National Home Security Month, which I’m going to talk about in this post.

Your home is the place where you expect to feel safe and secure above all other places in the world. It’s where we have all our high value possessions such as televisions, computers and stereo equipment, but more importantly, it’s where we have our most valued sentimental items such as jewellery, gifts from loved ones and above all, our families themselves. So why do so many of us, not check how secure our homes are? Many doors and windows that look secure, can easily be compromised by burglars. In the year leading up to August 2015, there were 45,783 residential burglaries in London alone. See the crime figures issued by the Metropolitan Police here.

Securing your home doesn’t have to cost a fortune either, especially when you compare it to the cost and inconvenience of repairs and replacing items. The greater cost which cannot be measured however, is the anguish of losing sentimental heirlooms or gifts from loved ones, not to mention the loss of confidence from knowing an intruder has been in your home.

Doors can be reinforced with simple accessories to prevent them easily being forced off their frames from someone kicking them in for example. Good quality locks with the British Standard BS3621 kitemark will also make a huge difference. I have given advice in some of my earlier posts on the types of locks that will help deter burglars, but as National Home Security Month is about to begin, I’m really asking for your help to raise awareness among your friends and families.

Please don’t put off securing your homes, as many burglaries are the result of opportunists spotting a weakness in security as they are passing. Many burglaries could be avoided if the right measures were only taken sooner rather than later.

If you just need some friendly advice, we are always happy to help and as always, those of you in South London, Greenwich, Lewisham, Bromley, Beckenham, Bexley and Dartford are all entitled to a free, no obligation home security check by one of our team. Isn’t it better to be safe than sorry and give us a call, instead of leaving your home and your loved ones at risk? Why not help me the Burglar Annoyer, to raise awareness about home security during National Home Security Month in October 2015.

Until next time, take care and keep your loved ones safe.
